STITCH GUIDE: Sc = single crochet

Dc= double crochet

Tr = triple crochet

SPECIAL STITCHES:

LSC/Long Single Crochet: Insert hook on the designated row below the row you are working on, and work a sc into the skipped st, bringing your loop up to same height as previous stitches.

TRCL/Triple Crochet Cluster: Work 4 tr in same sp leaving last loops of each on hook. YO and through all 5 loops on hook.

COMMENCE PATTERN:

With A ch 5, join with sl st to form a ring.

Rnd. 1: Ch 5, [dc, ch 2] 7 times in ring, join with sl st to 3^rd ch of beg ch-5. (8 dc, 8 ch-2 sps)

Rnd.2: Sl st in next ch-2 sp, ch 4, 3 tr closed tog in same sp, ch 5, [trcl in next ch-2 sp, ch 5] 7 times, join with sl st in top of beg trcl. Finish off A.

Rnd. 3: Join B with *sc on top of trcl, ch 3, LSC on skipped dc in first Rnd., taking also the ch-5 in Rnd. 2 and leaving the yarn loose, ch 3, rep from * 7 times more, join with sl st to beg sc.

Weave in all ends.

With white, sc evenly around head. In tips of ears work 3 sc, on rounded edges of head work 2 sc tog in same st. Weave in ends.

With Black, sc in each sc of previous round. In 2^nd ch of 3 ch group at ear tip, work (sc, ch 1, sc). Weave in ends.

Face:

With Black and Gold yarns, embroider face onto front of head as shown on photo. Yarn ends may be tied in back of head instead of woven in if desired since lining will be applied.

Bow:

With Shocking Pink, ch 16.

Row 1: Dc in third ch from hook, dc in next two chs, hdc in next 3 chs, sl st in next 2 chs, hdc in next 3 chs, dc in last 3 chs, ch 2, turn.

Row 2: Skip first dc. Dc in next 2 dc, hdc in next 3 hdc, sl st in next 2 sl st, hdc in next 3 hdc, dc in next 3 hdc. Finish off. Leave tail for sewing bow to head.

Flower:

With Gold, make larger than normal loop around hook. (Chain 6, sc in loop) 6 times, join with sl st in loop. Finish off. Pull beginning yarn to tighten ring and close center of flower. Sew flower to bow. Attach bow to head.

Strap:

Using Shocking Pink, ch desired length for strap. Sc in second loop in back of ch. Sc in each loop in back of ch. Finish off. You will have two loose ends on one end of strap – weave them both in. Place the strap ends on the inside of the ears of one of the heads. Sew in place with needle and pink thread. Do not sew completely through to the front of head or pink thread will show on white head.

Lining:

To make a head pattern, place the head on a piece of paper and trace around it with pencil about ¼ inch wider. Cut this out to use as your pattern. Pin pattern onto fabric and cut out. With wrong sides together, pin lining to head; folding raw edges under, and making sure all yarn ends are tucked in. Hand stitch lining to head, leaving sc stitches in the border round of head free for assembly.

Assembly:

With wrong sides together and using Black, whip stitch both heads together beginning at tip of one ear and outlining to tip of other ear. Weave in ends. Using white thread, sew snap to the top middle of inside of head going through lining and white yarn to ensure stability. The white thread will not show on the outside of the white head. Do not sew through bow.

Here's the 8" square for the August Craft-a-Poem. It is called Tangled Threads. The center resembles a spider web. It is written specifically for fingering weight yarn.

The accompanying poem is written by Sir Walter Scott. Marmion, published in 1808, produced some of his most memorable lines. Canto VI , Stanza 17 reads:

Another July Craft-a-Poem

Here is another square for July. It is called Royal Romance and was inspired by the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. I really enjoyed creating this square. The center motif is doily-like and adds a certain elegance to the overall look, I think.

The accompanying piece is not a poem. It is the prayer that William and Kate composed together for their wedding. I thought that it was very touching.

“God our Father, we thank you for our families; for the love that we share and for the joy of our marriage In the business of each day keep our eyes fixed on what is real and important in life and help us to be generous with our time and love and energy. Strengthened by our union help us to serve and comfort those who suffer. We ask this in the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Amen.”

July Craft-a-Poem

The monthly Craft-a-Poem contest is now a seasonal event. So my first offering for the Summer season is the Patriot Star 8" block that I designed especially for Independence Day. It is worked up in the Unique Sheep Verve in Red, White and Blue with a size C / 2.75 mm hook.

PATRIOT STAR - 8" SQUARE

And here is the poem that goes with the square:

The Star Spangled Banner by: Francis Scott Key 1814

O say, can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? -
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming!
And the rocket’s red glare, the bomb’s bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;

Crochet Matriarch

I'm very sad to report the recent passing of one of crochet's matriarch's, Jean Leinhauser. Although I did not know her personally, I knew of her reputation as a great crochet designer and editor. I own many of her books and leaflets, and in fact, I even learned how to crochet from one of her leaflets back in 1982.

Jean founded Leisure Arts publishing company, the American School of Needlework, was editor and publisher of Crochet! magazine, and wrote the internet newsletter, Talking Crochet! She served as the co-chairman of the Standards Committee of the Craft Yarn Council of America, and she was co-owner of Crochet Partners and Creative Partners.

Here is a link to her many books. Take a look and maybe you'll find one you just have to have. Maybe you'll see one or two that you already have. :) Jean Leinhauser books are a staple for any crochet library.

I'm a tad late on this project, but nonetheless, here it is. My crochet project for May is an 8" square I designed especially for Mother's Day called "Mother's Corsage." It is worked up in The Unique Sheep Tinsel Toes fingering weight yarn, which gives it an extra delicate look. The pattern is exclusive to The Unique Sheep's Crochet Block-of-the-Month-Club.

Here is the poem I chose to accompany this crochet block.

Hypothyroidism

So now I’ve been diagnosed with yet another autoimmune condition – Hypothyroidism. Yes, I already knew I had this illness; I’d actually been diagnosed back in ’98. I just never really carried through with any type of treatment. It has always been on the back burner as the “forgotten” condition. I had plenty of other, more important, conditions to think about. Let’s see…..there’s the Lupus, the Autoimmune Hepatitis, the Fibromyalgia, the Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP)…..I even had to undergo some chemo last year for the ITP. So you can see how easy it would be to just “forget” about the least offensive ailment for the time being. At least, that was my rationale.

But now I’m at a place where I seem to have all my ailments under control. They seem to be behaving and I’m taking all my meds like a good girl should. J I feel that I’m at a good place right now and that I am able to add on another regime. You see, it’s not taking just another pill with the others I already take. If that were true – how easy would that be? No – this regime is a little different and requires some dedication.

I must take the medication first thing in the morning, by itself, at least 30 minutes before eating. So that means that I’ll have to take my meds twice in the morning. This is because we don’t know how all these meds would react with each other, so it’s best to take them separately. I agree. I started this morning, and I think that once I have a routine established, I will be okay. So now I take my meds 3 times a day - twice in the morning, and then at night.

I really want this to work. I learned that hypothyroidism is linked to depression, and since I battle with depression, it will be in my best interest to treat the hypothyroidism. My depression can only improve. How great will that be? I’m really excited to be talking about this and I have high hopes for my future. My Endocrinologist is super and I look forward to a great working relationship with her. I’ll keep you all updated on my progress. J

This month marks the 2 year anniversary of my blog. I began MoCrochet back in May of 2009 wanting a venue to post my original patterns. My, how it has grown. I have made some friends along the way, and my following has grown to 151 as of today. Thank you to all of my followers. I really appreciate the time you spend with me on my blog. I especially appreciate all your comments. Comments let me know that you are listening to me and that I'm on the right track. I love your comments - keep them coming! And to all of you lurkers out there. I know you are there - you silent stalkers. Keep stopping by - you're welcome here also.

National Prayer Day

Today is National Prayer Day. I encourage you all to pray for someone or something dear to you. Whether you have a God or not is not important; your religion is not important. We all can say a few words on someone else's behalf just for today. What or who will I pray for today? I will give you just a few highlights. Among other personal things, today, especially, I will pray for:

1. Peace in the world - especially after recent events.
2. Wisdom for our world leaders, especially our own US President Obama.
3. The safety of our military, especially for my son who is in the Navy.
4. My husband and his school work.
5. The safety and well being of my family.

Little Sunglass Clutch - Pattern for Sale

An old favorite, the Little Sunglass Clutch. Make it just in time for Mother's Day and Spring! It was designed to mimic a pair of sunglasses, but it doesn't have to be used as an eyeglass case. It can also be a little clutch or purse to use when a larger one isn't needed. I use mine all the time when I go to the grocery store or shopping. I put my car keys in it, my debit card, my driver's license, etc; and I use the little wrist strap and then hold it in my left hand while I do my shopping. It's very handy and doesn't get in the way, especially when I don't have any pockets to carry anything. At $2.00 US currency for the written pattern, the price is right to try it out.

April Craft-a-Poem

It's time for April's Craft-a-Poem. Thanks to Sara from Lazy Knits and Purls for hosting this contest. Every month she chooses a random winner who receives a prize of a Ravelry pattern or a Knit Picks gift certificate. I am tickled pink to report that I won for the month of March, and I chose the gift certificate! With the gift cert, I bought a crochet book, of course (like I don't have enough), and I absolutely love it! Now I have to take the time to browse through it and drool and then work through some of the patterns. Then I can continue on with what I had already started!

I finally worked up my 8" squares for this month using The Unique Sheep Luxe in Light Bark and Spring Pink. These colors were inspired by the Double Cherry blossoms in the backyard of the artist. How wonderful! Be sure you click on the link and look at the photo of the cherry blossoms - they are just beautiful!

The square I designed is called "Blooming Beauty," and the poem I chose to accompany it is William Shakespeare's Sonnet 54. It is in part of Sonnets 1-126, which are called the Fair Youth sonnets.The sonnets were first published together in 1609.

O! how much more doth beauty beauteous seem

By that sweet ornament which truth doth give.

The rose looks fair, but fairer we it deem

For that sweet odour, which doth in it live.

The canker blooms have full as deep a dye

As the perfumed tincture of the roses,

This is how the sonnet might read in modern speech:

Oh how much more beautiful beauty is when the truth is told. The rose is pretty but we make it seem even prettier based on its smell. Canker blooms (wild roses) have the same color as the slightly perfumed (crimson or demask) roses which hang on violent thorns that swing about when summer’s wind unveils their disguised buds: but this is all for show, they live unnoticed and disrespected and die alone. Roses do not have this fate, after they die you can still smell them. So even when you die my lovely youth and your beauty fades my words will make your beauty immortal.

A Square a Day in May CAL

Well it's Wedding Anniversary time in my family. My 8th wedding anniversary is April 1st. My older sister's 6th wedding anniversary is April 2nd, and my younger sister's 20th wedding anniversary is April 20th. What a month! What great celebrations! In honor of my sisters anniversaries, I have put together an afghan for each of them. They are both made up of 12" squares that I have designed myself. Some are available for free right here on my blog - some are not - some will be available shortly. I thought these afghans would be extra special for my sisters since I not only crocheted them myself, but I also designed each square myself. My younger sister crochets, so she will know the true meaning of this; however, my older sister will surely cherish it also. I don't know which afghan I will give to which sister - I will just wrap them up and have them each choose a bundle. That way they get what they get. Each afghan is a work of art no matter which one it is. :) I can't wait to give them away. I think they will make wonderful anniversary gifts and show my sisters just how special I think they are to me. :)

I hope my sisters like their afghans. Tell me what you think.

COMMENCE PATTERN:

With Color A, ch 22.

Row 1: Dc in 6^th ch from hook, *ch 1, skip next ch, dc in next ch, rep from * across, turn.

Row 2: Ch 4, *1 dc in next dc, ch 1, rep from * across, skip next ch of turning ch, dc in next ch of turning ch, turn.

Row 3 – 9: Rep Row 2. Fasten off. You should have a block of nine ch-1 sps on each side.

March - Craft a Poem

I have finished my project for March's Craft a Poem. It is the crochet block for The Unique Sheep's Crochet Block-of-the-Month Club. I designed this block myself and named it "Picots and Lace." It makes me think of upper class ladies in beautiful lace dresses and white gloves sipping tea.

The poem I chose goes well with this theme. It is by Ann Taylor (1782 - 1866), an English poet and literary critic. (Both picture and poem are in the public domain.)

February Crafting Poem

My February crafting poem is short and sweet. It is a humorous poem from a classical poet, Stephen Crane. Stephen Crane (November 1, 1871 – June 5, 1900) was an American novelist, short story writer, poet and journalist. Prolific throughout his short life, he wrote notable works in the Realist tradition as well as early examples of American Naturalism and Impressionism. He is recognized by modern critics as one of the most innovative writers of his generation.

At the time of his death, Crane had become an important figure in American literature. He was nearly forgotten, however, until two decades later when critics revived interest in his life and work. Stylistically, Crane's writing is characterized by vivid intensity, distinctive dialects, and irony. Common themes involve fear, spiritual crises and social isolation. Although recognized primarily for The Red Badge of Courage, which has become an American classic, Crane is also known for short stories such as "The Open Boat", "The Blue Hotel", "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky", and The Monster. His writing made a deep impression on 20th century writers, most prominent among them Ernest Hemingway, and is thought to have inspired the Modernists and the Imagists.

My craft is another crochet square. This one is appropriately called "Galaxy." It is done in The Unique Sheep's Pashmi in Purple and Red fingering weight yarn. What beautiful colors. I designed this 8" square for the Crochet Block-of-the-Month Club.

Popcorn Stitch Purse

I have a friend who doesn't crochet, but loves the popcorn stitch. She wanted me to crochet her a purse featuring the stitch. So I used my CROWN JEWELS pattern (through round 7) and then improvised the rest. The popcorns are in green. I don't think I could write the rest of the pattern down after the fact, and I didn't think to write it down as I was going. But I do want to show it to you. I have the outer shell finished as well as the strap. My friend has picked out the fabric for the lining as you can see in the photo. So I need to sew in the lining (with an inside pocket) and add a closure strap and button, and then I'm finished. I think that sewing the lining will be the hardest part for me, as I haven't sewn in a while and I'm probably rusty. I think I will hand baste it first to stabilize it, then sew it in with a machine. I think that will be my best plan of action. The purse is 14" long, 10" tall, and the gusset is 3" wide. Any suggestions are welcome.

More Crochet - Alongs

At the beginning of the year, there are a host of new crochet alongs starting up. I previously posted about the RED HEART CAL. Here are a couple of others you might be interested in joining. Some are free, some are not. You decide which one/s you would like to participate in. They all are different, and they all sound like fun to me.
AMERICAN YARNS is sponsoring a Rainbow Ripple afghan CAL beginning on February 14. The afghan itself is going to be a surprise, but here are all the pretty colors:

Over at CAFEMOM, there is a 52 week dishcloth CAL. You will crochet a dishcloth a week for 52 weeks. I believe you need to register with CafeMom first in order to join the group. Registration is free.

And lastly, HASS DESIGN is sponsoring a Bruges CAL for 2011. Learn how to crochet Bruges lace while making these 4 doilies.

Bruges lace consists of ribbons and tape which form beautiful ornaments. These ribbons are connected by crocheting small chains and stitches. The ribbons are also decorated by chains or motifs to form the most beautiful lace work.

In this new 2011 Crochet-Along, you will learn how to crochet several different kinds of Bruges ribbons and tape. You will also learn different techniques on how to shape and join them. Crafting Poetry - A Poem A Month

I have started a new challenge for this year. As if I haven't started enough already, what with the Block-of-the-Month Club and WIP's and UFO's. I am now joining Sara from Lazy Knits and Purls on a poetry adventure. Each month I will choose a poet and read from their works; then hopefully I shall become inspired to design or to crochet a work of art. Doesn't this sound like fun? I think this will be do-able for me, as poetry is generally short and I don't have much time to read. But I love to read and I do love poetry, so I think this new project is a good match. Sara also has a group started on Ravelry located here: Crafting Poetry. Remember you must be logged in to Ravelry for the link to work.

The poem I chose for January is "Maid of Athens, ere we part" by Lord Byron. It was written in 1810 and dedicated to a young girl of Athens. Each stanza of the poem ends with the same Greek refrain which Byron translated as, "My life, I love you!"

In conjunction with this lovely poem, I have crocheted this beautiful 8" square (which I also designed) called Cameo Flower. I could just imagine the lovely maiden giving Lord Byron a cameo of her likeness for him to remember her as they parted ways. I guess I'm just a romantic.

What a nice surprise to find that Miss Clara from Clara's Crochet Room has awarded me with the Stylish Blogger Award! Thank you Clara!

Rules are that I have to reveal several fun things about myself:

1. I received the Smile Award in the 5th grade.

2. In the 6th grade, my art project angel was chosen to sit atop the school Christmas tree.

3. My brother and I, who was 13 months older than myself, used to tell people that we were twins - and we got away with it. :)

4. At times, we also told people that we were cousins and that he was just living with our family for a while.

5. When I was a small child I thought I was Chinese because it was reported in the news that every fourth born person in the world was Chinese and I was the fourth born child in my family. Of course my older siblings instigated this plot.

6. When I was a teenager I must have looked older than my years because there were several instances where people thought that I was my baby sister's mother. She is 6 years younger than myself. So we liked to pretend to strangers that we were mother and daughter.

7. In the grocery store, much to my mother's chagrin, my little sister and I would pretend to speak in a foreign language to each other. It was all jibberish and we got plenty of odd looks.

Now that I've let you in on my creative childhood, I'd like to pass on this award to the following blogs:

Crafter's Creed

If you knit or crochet - or craft of any nature for that matter - I'm sure that like me, you have some works in progress (WIP) or unfinished objects (UFO's). I have several projects that I have been working on and slowly making progress on. I keep saying that eventually I will get around to it and get them done. Don't you say the same thing? How many WIP's and UFO's do you have sitting around the house begging for your attention? Do you even know? When was the last time you took an inventory?

I say, let's start the New Year with a new craft resolution. Let's finish up all those WIP's and UFO's that we have laying around and hiding in the corner of the closet. Get them all out and decide if you really want to finish them. If not, then either frog them and save the yarn for yet another project, or throw it out completely. Don't be squeamish - now is the time for courage! You can do it - just make that decision and stick to it. Keep it, ot toss it - one or the other. If you keep it, you will finish it in 2011. That is your promise to yourself. Right here, right now. Let's recite a Crafter's Creed. Raise your right hand (holding hook or needle), place your left hand over your pattern books, and repeat after me: "I solemnly swear on all things soft and yarny, that I will do my best to work on my poor neglected projects on a consistent basis, giving them all the attention they deserve, and seeing them blossom stitch by stitch to their full fruition in 2011. This I do solemnly swear."

There you have it! Now go forward with hook (or needle) in hand and get busy! Take on your first project and let's help one another this year. My husband and I go to Yarnorama, our Local Yarn Shop (LYS), on Thursday nights specifically to work on our WIP's and UFO's. We have a whole group who meets there and does the same thing. It's great when you have the support of so many - you get so much done and have a great time also.

My husband really enjoys his knitting time at the LYS. I'm beginning to think it's because of all the attention he gets for being the only male on board. :) He is cute - isn't he? And an excellent knitter. He's in the process of knitting me a sweater. His goal is to finish it by our wedding anniversary on April 1st.

I have one Finished Object (FO) that I've had stashed at the house for the past year now, and I haven't given it away yet. I finally decided what to do with it. It's an afghan made from all my 12" squares that I've designed. If you look closely, you'll see the same squares that are shown as samples in my 12" patterns. After I wrote all those patterns, I had all those squares that I had worked up; so I made them into an afghan. Now I've finally decided to give it to one of my two sisters.

Now to my WIP. I have sixteen 12" squares all done and I need eight more to make another afghan. This afghan will be comprised of squares that I have also designed. These are new designs that have not been published yet, and won't be for some time. I will give this afghan to my other sister. I will number both afghans one and two and then they will draw for it to determine which afghan is theirs. That is the onl;y fair way to give them away I think. Here are the squares so far:

All three of our wedding anniversaries (my sisters and I) are in April, so I thought that would be a great time to gift them each with an afghan. I have one all ready, and one in need of eight more squares, I think that is do-able in 2 1/2 months. I will track my progress for you here. I will hold myself accountable to you. Something is A-fowl

Today I am roasting a turkey. I know it is not Christmas Day or even Thanksgiving Day - the usual turkey days. But I have a 7 pound bird that my stepdaughter raised and slaughtered that needs to be cooked or frozen. Since I have no room in my freezer, I will have to cook it. So I asked my 23 yr. old son over for supper tonight to join in the feast. I looked up on the world-wide-web how to cook a turkey, since this one comes with absolutely no instructions. I gathered that a bird of about 7 lbs. (give or take a couple) should roast at 350 degrees for about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. I will need to keep checking the internal temperature of the bird to make sure it is done. There is no convenient pop-up thermometer (darn-it!).

First I had to wash the bird real good and make sure all the feathers were disposed of. My stepdaughter had the gruesome job of de-feathering the birds at slaughtering time, but she did leave a few for me to pick over. :) Then I had to tie up the legs and tuck under the wings. I then buttered up the bird and salt and peppered it. I went ahead and put a little bit of water in the pan to keep the bird moist, even though some instructions say this is not necessary. My bird is just plain and simple. Salt, pepper and an oven. That's it. Clean-up was more work than turkey preparation. I had to use soap and water on everything the turkey touched - the sink , utensils, etc. I kept having to wash my hands before I touched something else or I would contaminate it. But it was all worth it - the bird tasted fantastic!

My side dishes are brussels sprouts, and homemade mashed potatoes with gravy. I made a COCONUT CREAM PIE (click for recipe) for dessert, which was very simple to make, and quite delicious I might add. Now you might think the fuss is all about cooking this darn turkey - but no! What I want to know is....what do I do with all the darn leftovers????

Easy Crab Dip Recipe

Here's a giant goldfish that was caught in the south of France. The fisher needed about 10 minutes to get the fish to shore, but released it after the photo was taken. Other fishermen had been trying to catch it for the past 6 years. What a whopper!

Which leads me to a yummy recipe that my brother-in-law brings to our family get-togethers. It's his famous Crab Dip. We all love it and request it from him every time we have a special occasion, such as Christmas. I hope you will enjoy it too!

WALTER'S CRAB CREAM CHEESE DIP

---------------------------------------------------------

2 lg. bars cream cheese (softened)

1 pkg. imitation crab legs chopped up or 2 cans crab meat

1 jar cocktail sauce

Soften cream cheese and spread on serving platter. Layer chopped crab legs on top of cream cheese. Spread cocktail sauce on top. Serve with crackers to dip.

Here is Square #9 for the Sensational Sampler. Let me say that this lapghan was so fun to make and I hope you have fun with it too. I sure would like to know what all you make with your squares. Just use an H hook and block to 8". Then you can do what I did and add a dc border to it after that and it will come to about 9". Remember that my lapghan is made up of 16 squares, so I made 4 extra squares. I just made my favorite pattern/s again. Let me know how your progress is coming along. Only 3 more squares to go!

Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in each ch to end, turn.

Here is Square #8 for the Sensational Sampler. Use an H hook and block to 8". Add a dc border around it after blocking to reach 9". I used ecru, but you can use any contrasting color of your choice. Have fun and I hope you enjoy making these blocks!

Here is Square #7 for the Sensational Sampler. Use an H hook and block to 8". I added a dc border around it with contrasting color of ecru. You can use any contrasting color you choose. It then works up to be 9". Nice work for the Thanksgiving weekend.

Here is the Sensational Sampler Square #5. Use an H hook and block to 8". I add a dc border in Ecru around it after blocking which brought it to 9". Remember that these squares can be used for more than a lapghan or afghan. Use them for potholders (sew two together), dishcloths, washcloths, shawls, scarves - all depending on the yarn you choose and the way you join them together. Have fun with them!
