STITCH GUIDE: Sc = single crochet
Hdc= half double crochet
Dc= double crochet
SPECIAL STITCHES:
V-st: In sp or st indicated work (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc).
V-st in V-st: Work V-st in the ch-1 sp of V-st one row below.
COMMENCE PATTERN:
Ch 6, sl st into first ch to form a ring.
Rnd. 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), work 15 dc into ring, sl st into 3rd ch of beg ch-3.
Rnd. 2: Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc, ch 2), 1 dc into same st as last sl st, *ch 1, skip 1 dc, into next dc work (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc); rep from * 6 times more, ch 1, sl st into 3rd ch of beg ch-5.
Rnd. 3: Sl st into first ch-2 sp, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), into same sp work (1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), *ch 1, into next ch-2 sp work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc); rep from * 6 times more, ch 1, sl st into 3rd ch of beg ch-3.
Rnd. 4: Sl st into next dc and first ch-2 sp, ch 3, work 6 dc into same sp as last sl st, 1 sc into next ch sp, (7 dc into next ch-2 sp, 1 sc into next ch sp) 7 times, sl st into 3rd ch of beg ch-3.
Rnd. 5: Sl st into 4th dc of 7-dc group, ch 1, sc in same st, ch 4, *1 dc into next sc, ch 4, 1 sc in 4th dc of next 7-dc group, ch 4, rep from * around, sl st in first sc. (16 ch-4 loops)
Rnd. 6: Sl st into next ch-4 sp, ch 1, in same sp work 4 sc, 4 sc in next ch-4 sp, *in next ch-4 sp work (2 hdc, 2 dc), ch 2, in next ch-4 sp work (2 dc, 2 hdc), work 4 sc in each of next 2 ch-4 sps, rep from * twice more, in next ch-4 sp work (2 hdc, 2 dc), ch 2, in next ch-4 sp work (2 dc, 2 hdc), join with sl st to beg sc.
Rnd. 7: Ch 3, *1 dc in each st to corner ch-2 sp, in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), rep from * around square, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (20 dc on each side)
Rnd. 8: Sl st in next 2 sts, ch 4 (counts as 1 dc, ch 1), 1 dc in same st, *skip 2 st, work (V-st, skip 2 st) to corner ch-2 sp, in corner work (V-st, ch 2, V-st), rep from * around square, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-4.
Rnd. 9: Sl st into next ch-1 sp, ch 4, 1 dc in same sp, work V-st in next V-st to corner, in corner work (V-st, ch 2, V-st) rep pat around square, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-4.
Rnd. 10: Rep Rnd. 9.
Rnd. 11: Ch 2, hdc in ch-1 sps and in each dc across to corner ch-2 sp, in corner work 3 hdc, rep pat around square, join with sl st to beg hdc. Finish off, weave in ends, block.

ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful square but I am having issues with it being too big in the center. I am a tight crocheter and consistant so I'm not sure why. When I fold the square in half it's obvious that the center is too big. Is it supposed to be baggy or puckered? Thanks for any help.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of any of this type of problem with the square. However, here are my measurements: After Rnd. 4 is almost at 6", after Rnd. 7 is almost at 8". Maybe this will help guide you.
Deletemine did too, I used 4 chain as my start instead of 6. that helped me.
DeleteI would love a video tutorial of this pattern. I'm having trouble with getting the rounds figured out. I'm not great, but love learning the craft.

DeleteI had the same problem as above, the center puffed out ... so what I did is I changd the single crochets in the shells to dc and the dc in the sc to treble crochets. Worked like a charm. :) Thank you, Melinda for this really spectacular pattern.

DeleteI love this pattern! Last Christmas, I used it to make an afghan...just went with a larger hook and continued the last round until it reached the size I wanted. I used the photo I took of it for my cover page on FaceBook. I STILL get messages from people asking where I got the pattern and commenting on how beautiful it is. I happily direct them to this page. ReplyDeleteHave several squares completed using pastel colors for the center flower and then green for three rounds with white V's to finish. Just love it. Easy to follow and I think it will make a beautiful afghan when I get it all put together. Thanks for sharing the pattern
