HAPPY STRIPES BABY BLANKET

This pattern uses four colors of the Bernat Baby Coordinates Sweet Stripes yarn. It is self-striping and creates it’s own pattern. The texture of the yarn is such that when whipstitched together, the seams are hidden and the blanket becomes reversible. The pattern can be adjusted to three different sizes, depending upon your project. Good for beginners and experienced crocheters alike.
Sizes: 34” X 34” before border
A Preemie blanket can be made of 9 squares (27” X 27”)
or 4 squares (16” X 16”)

Materials:
(DISCONTINUED) Bernat Baby Coordinates Sweet Stripes - 1 skein each of Sunny Stripes, Grape Stripes, Sprite Stripes, and Melon Stripes

Bernat Baby Coordinates - 1 skein of Lovely Lilac
USE ANY SELF-STRIPING BABY YARN
Crochet Hook size G/4.0 mm
Tapestry Needle
Guage: 3 rows = 1”
1 finished square = 8” X 8”
Stitches: Sc – Single Crochet
Hdc – Half Double Crochet
Dc – Double Crochet
Sl St – Slip Stitch
Square: Make 4 each in yellow, purple, green and orange.
Ch 30. (Should measure 8” long)
Row 1. Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in each ch
across. Ch 1, turn. (29 sc)
Row 2 - 29. Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. (29 sc)
Row 30. Sc in each sc across. Fasten off, leaving a 12”
tail for sewing squares together. (29 sc)
Finishing: Using tapestry needle, sew squares together
following photo. Weave in ends.
Border:
Row 1: Using Lilac and beginning in a corner stitch,
work 121 hdc evenly around each side of blanket as follows: 3 hdc in each
corner, 29 hdc on side of each square, and 1 hdc in each of three joins. See
diagram below.
Row 2: Sl St in first hdc after middle corner stitch.
Skip next 2 hdc, 5 dc in next hdc, skip next 2 hdc, [*sl st in next hdc, skip
next 2 hdc, 5 dc in next hdc, skip next 2 hdc, sl st in next hdc,* repeat from
* to * for length of side, ch 3, skip middle corner stitch, sl st in next
hdc,], repeat [ ] around blanket, join with sl st in beg sl st. Fasten
off. Weave in ends.

ReplyDeleteHi there! The Bernat Baby Coordinates Sweet Stripes yarn is a self-striping yarn, so no color changes needed. You might also be able to find other self-striping yarn that would work, too. Just use your imagination. Another great thing about this pattern is that it is totally reversible. Thanks for asking. Melinda
DeleteI think I see the same thing, I think she forgot to mention switching colors to create the stripes. Unless the yarn she has is a multi-colored yarn? Not sure.
ReplyDeleteThis pattern uses a type of yarn that is discontinued. I wish I could find out how many feet or yards the colors charge to be able to get the same effect. I emailed Bernat and they say that they don't know. Does anyone know any specifics?
ReplyDeleteBernat is recommending Bernat Baby Coordinates yarn as a substitute. You could also look at Mary Maxim's Sugar Baby Stripes yarn, as the color change seems to be very similar to my original yarn. I'm sorry that the original yarn has been discontinued, as I designed this pattern 4 years ago. Let me know which yarn you choose and how it works out so that I can make a recommendation on the pattern. Thanks!!!
DeleteIsn't this basket weave, worked off a single square? Ultimately one piece, work stripes of square 2 perpendicular(90 degree angle) to first square's stripes?
ReplyDeleteThere are 16 separate squares, all worked the same. Then I turned them when joining to create the basket weave effect.

ReplyDeleteWhat yarn would you suggest since this yarn is discounted I am looking at Bernat Softee Baby Stripes Yarn which is a “ 3 light “ am wondering how this will affect the size did a practice piece with “ 4 medium “ which was 9 inches also how many skeins and what size are needed. ReplyDeleteHi Donna - I think the Bernat Softee Baby Stripes will work perfectly. It is the same weight as my original yarn and uses the same size hook. You should easily attain an 8" square. I used approx. 2,020 yds total - so 7 skeins of Softee should be enough. Enjoy the pattern. :)
