Good Monday
morning everyone. I hope you had a great weekend with some yarn on your hook.
We are starting our second week of the Spring Cleaning Dishcloth CAL, and I
hope you are all caught up.
Today’s
dishcloth is a little involved – but well worth the time and effort. We will
use the Grit Stitch, which is comprised of a combination of the single crochet
and double crochet stitches. This makes for a scrubby texture – much like the
name “grit” sounds.
With its unique
construction, you will thoroughly enjoy working each step and seeing how it all
comes together. I used 3 colors, but you can use as few as 2 or as many as you
like. Make several of these cloths with different color schemes, and see how
different they each look.
This is
definitely “not your ordinary” Octagon Dishcloth!

INSTRUCTIONS
SECTION ONE:
This
section is worked in one piece, changing colors at the end of rows. It might
help to place a SM on the RS for future reference.
Odd
rows are RS – even rows are WS.
Row 1: With A ch 12,
working in back bumps of chs, sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch to
end, ch 1, turn. (11 sc)
Row 2: [(Sc, dc) in first
st, sk next st] to last st, sc in last st, ch 1, turn.
Rows 3 - 8: Rep
Row 2. Change to Color B in last st of Row 8.
Row 9: Sc in first and each
st to end, ch 1, turn. (11 sc)
Rows 10 - 16: Rep
Row 2, changing to Color A in last st.
Row 17: Rep
Row 9.
Rows 18 – 24: Rep
Row 2 and finish off.
Weave
in ends.
SECTION TWO:
Row 1: With RS facing,
rotate cloth as shown below and join A with sc where indicated in photo.
Work
10 more sc evenly across the vertical edge of Color B as shown below. (11 sc)
Rows 2 – 8: Rep
Row 2 as in Section One. Finish off.
Rotate
piece to other vertical side of Color B and rep Rows 1 – 8 as above. Finish
off.
Now
your piece will look like a plus sign.
SECTION THREE:
The
next section consists of working inserts to create an octagon.
Row 1: With RS facing,
rotate piece as shown below and join Color C with a sc where indicated. Work 6
more sc down the edge (total of 7 sc on first edge), place 1 sc in center where
all 3 colors meet, and work 7 sc up the next edge, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc2tog, sc in next 4
sts, sc3tog, sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog in last 2 sts, ch 1, turn. (11 sc)
Row 3: Sc2tog, sc in next 2
sc, sc3tog, sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn. (7 sc)
Row 4: Sc2tog, sc3tog,
sc2tog, ch 1, turn. (3 sc)
To
finish, sk the first sc2tog and the sc3tog, sl st into the 2nd
sc2tog, finish off, weave ends.
This
makes a straight edge to shape the octagon.
Repeat for all inserts.
Your octagon is taking shape!
SECTION FOUR:
Border
Rnd. 1:
With RS facing, join Color C with sc to the right-hand st of any Color A
section, (hdc, sc) in same st – corner made, [sc in next 9 sts, (sc, hdc, sc)
in last st on Color A – corner made, work 9 sc evenly across Color C section, (sc, hdc, sc) in next
Color A st – corner made] around omitting last 3 corner sts, join with sl st to
beg sc, finish off.
Rnd. 2:
Join Color B with sl st in any corner hdc, ch 1 (does not count as a st), 3 hdc
in same st, work 1 hdc in each sc and 3 hdc in each corner hdc around, join
with sl st to beg hdc, finish off, weave in ends.
