Poetry in Hymn

Today I was going through the Lutheran Hymnal again, and another hymn touched me. I just have to share it with you. I love good poetry and when good poetry is not just inspirational, but actually moves me to tears, then I must do something about it. So I will share it with you. Usually this type of emotion requires some type of action on my part. Sometimes I will write my own poetry, or somehow do an action that a verse is speaking of, or say a prayer for someone, etc. -  whatever I am inspired to do. Today I am inspired to share this with you. This is from Hymn # 514 "God Moves in a Mysterious Way," by William Cowper, 1774; based on John 13:7. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have and that it will inspire something in you too!

                                            William Cowper

3. Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy and shall break
In blessings on your head.

4. Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.

5. His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour;
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.
